XP upgrade is not a simple matter,
11/11/2009
By: Curmudgeon, Kansas City, Missouri
The Sam's Club description of the product, "Windows 7 Professional Upgrade," says, "To be eligible for the offer, you need to be running a genuine copy of the Windows XP or Windows Vista operating systems."
Of course, this implies that the user is able to directly upgrade Windows XP systems to Windows 7. What the Sam's Club Web site fails to tell you is that, in order to "upgrade" an XP system, you must perform a custom installation that is, in essence, a "clean" install.
This from Microsoft (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7): "A custom installation doesn't preserve your programs, files, or settings. It's sometimes called a 'clean' installation for that reason.
"A custom installation is more complex, and it can sometimes take a couple of hours to complete."
Actually, you have to have another computer or at least another hard drive or large flash drive to back up all your settings, and then you'll still lose -- and have to reinstall -- what may be many programs and applications. (Do you still have each of your original CDs and registration keys?)
With the extra steps, plus the re-installation of >all< programs, files, and settings, the migration from Windows XP to Windows 7 likely will take several hours, not just "a couple."
A new install will clean out your Windows XP system's registry, of course -- and that's a real benefit -- but it is not a simple matter, and the process does require you to have additional hardware or other resources.
Last week, I spoke with a Microsoft retail analyst, who also is an experienced IT guy, who confirmed the above-mentioned details about upgrading Windows XP to Windows 7.
Transitioning to Windows 7 likely is a good idea for most Windows XP users, but don't expect it to be simple or quick.

Windows 7 Pro Upgrade,
11/09/2009
By: UnemployedOne, Omaha, NE
I used the Windows 7 Pro upgrade to make my machine a dual boot to XP or Windows7. While I have a new 1TB hard drive, the install was a little harry. It would not install with my sata dvd drive and I had to hook up an old IDE dvd drive as well as copy my sata controller drivers from my motherboard to a floppy and point to that when asked for drivers so it would see the sata hard drive. That took a couple days to figure out. After that the install went fine.

I have not loaded it yet. I thought it would be for more than one PC - that is not right to limit the loads in one household.

Windows 7 moves a lot faster than Vista, but the look of it is taking a long time to get used to. Upgrade if you would like better speed and somewhat easier access to files. If you are happy with Vista, then don't feel the need to have the latest and greatest.

Windows 7 Pro is the best Windows yet,
11/06/2009
By: steve4ctl
Since I had Windows XP Pro installed, I had to perform a "clean" install of Windows 7. The process is straight forward and the Windows Easy Transfer made transferring My Documents, Picture, etc. fairly painless. Having to reinstall all my programs was a pain, but the upgrade was worth it. My laptop is actually running much better with Win 7 than it did with Win XP. Win 7 installer was able to find and install all the required hardware drivers automatically. That was a relief.

Windows 7 Professional Upgrade,
11/04/2009
By: Mazinger
Very fast windows operating system, detected all the computer devices during the installation. The only disappoint is that the Win7 Pro does not performed upgrade from lower Professional version of windows. Instead of that, the Win 7 perform a new fresh installation, moving your lower version of windows in a "Windows.old" directory.

I upgraded from Win XP pro to Win 7 pro without any problems. Win 7 is very fast and elegant. There were a few tricks of the trade to get all of the features of peripherials working again, but nothing major. Highly recommend this upgrade.

Windows 7 Professional Upgrade as a Full Install,
11/04/2009
By: IronFist, Bethlehem, PA
I used the upgrade software and used the known "trick" to perform a full install. I am completely satified with both the installation procedure along with how OS 7 functions. This OS is what Vista should have been. A home run for Microsoft.

Windows 7 Professional Upgrade,
11/04/2009
By: upsiddle, Lake Forest Park, Washington
I ordered two copies of "Windows 7 Professional Upgrade" from SamsClub.com in July 2009. The order was shipped via UPS on the release date of the software (Thursday, October 22, 2009) and arrived as promised the following Wednesday.
I did a "Clean Install" of 64bit WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL on two computers without any problem. One upgrade was from 64bit WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE the other was from 32bit VISTA HOME PREMIUM.
I find both upgraded computers boot faster and open programs faster than in VISTA. This upgrade is a winner. Congratulations MICROSOFT for a job well done.
I changed some WINDOWS 7 operating defaults i.e., CONTROL PANEL Icon Display etc., to give me easier access to devices and files.

Best Price,
11/04/2009
By: Army1
I upgraded two computers to Windows 7, if I could get the same discount from Sam’s Club I would purchase another for my third computer; otherwise I’m a very satisfy customer. The delivery was in the time/frame expected and the condition of the packaging was good. The installation when faultlessly and to the day everything is working has expected.

I've been a beta tester for Windows 7 since April. The laptop never crashed once in all that time. I've upgraded two laptops to Windows 7 this week with ease.
The price? They could have made it a little cheaper with all the problems vista gave us.
